Safe Disposal of Drugs

In our continuing effort to protect our environment, MAWSS is partnering with the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office and City of Mobile Police Department on Operation Medicine Cabinet, a program offering a safe way to dispose of unused, unwanted or expired drugs. This program aims to keep drugs out of the hands of teens and out of the environment.

Drugs and medicine should not be flushed down the toilet or sink. Wastewater treatment facilities are not designed to break down or remove drugs flushed into the wastewater system. This could result in:

  • Contaminated soil, rivers and streams and groundwater 
  • Polluted waterways that can be harmful to marine life & the environment 
  • Drinking water that can contain traces of antibiotics and other drugs

OK to Deposit: 

  • OTC medications such as expired cough syrup 
  • Prescription samples & medications 
  • Medication samples 
  • Prescriptions for household pets 
  • Medicated lotions or ointments 

Not OK to Deposit: 

  • Needles or other sharp objects 
  • Thermometers 
  • Hazardous waste 
  • Trash/empty containers
